Kannawidan: Celebration of Culture and Tradition of Ilocano

Kannawidan Ylocos Festival is being celebrated every month of February. This celebration is relevant to Ilocano's as It is a festival in the Province of Ilocos Sur commemorating the separation of the two Ilocos provinces in 1818. This festival is a showcase of indigenous performances, religious rituals, as well cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes. It is the Ilocanos’ way of giving thanks to the Almighty not only for the bountiful blessings but also for the rich heritage of the province, including the close family ties among the Ilocanos. With this festival, you can also learn the culture and tradition of every Ilocano's in different municipalities and cities of Ilocos Sur.

Main events like mini-concerts, dancing competition and different activities usually happening in the Tamag Grounds, Vigan City. You can also see here different food stalls and product sellers from different towns of Ilocos Sur. Carnival is also present every year of celebration of Kannawidan, it is a place were kids usually enjoy to go to play, ride and eat. Street dancing for me is the main event of Kannawidan Festival because this activity showcase the talent, tradition and culture of Ilocanos in Ilocos Sur. Every towns has their own dance presentation, their dances represents something that is related to their towns culture or festivals like Vigan City's Longganisa Festival, Candon City's Calamay Festival and many more. The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival encourages the younger generations to learn the indigenous songs and dances of the province of Ilocos Sur.

With the current situation of COVID-19 in Ilocos Sur, celebration of festivals is limited only, the traditional way of celebrating festivals is limited as it is also for the safety of Ilocano people in the Province. The pandemic affected us so much that even our celebrations and traditions has changed due to its threat effects. Maybe the way of celebrating Kannawidan Ylocos Festival has changed, but the relevance and essence of this festival will remain to us. Agbiag Kannawidan Festival. Tawid ti Ilocano, naragsak ken napateg nga selebrasyon ti biag iti maysa nga Ilocano.

“The Right Type of Resilience”

We Filipinos are known because of our resiliency. Resilience means the capacity to recover quickly from problems or difficulties. The Philippines is very vulnerable to disasters, it is one of the natural hazard-prone countries in the world. The country is highly prone to natural disasters like earthquakes, tropical cyclones, floods, and volcanic eruptions. Destructions of agricultural products, houses, and government properties always happen after a disaster. But Filipinos will try to overcome this suffering and traumatic disaster experience, showing their resiliency.      In an article written by Pamela, she stated that “Every time, the Filipino nation has to endure, brave the chaos, and stand up the next day. It is from this that we’ve grown to be called a resilient nation. Because we have had to become one.” Being resilient is not a bad thing, but we tend to forget that we’re supposed to be striving for something more. What we need to do af...

"Education: A Right and Not a Privilege"

Many things has been change because of the COVID-19 pandemic that also causes the whole world to shut down. Last school year, schools here in the Philippines did not open and learning happened through online classes and distance learning. As a student, since it’s my first experience to do learning alone in a whole school year, I feel so exhausted and stressed during those times. There are times that I feel like I can’t continue studying anymore, that I can’t finish all my works in time and many more thoughts that made my energy down in the whole school year. I feel bad for myself because I did not adapt all the things that I need to learn that year because of the pressure I felt.          The new normal of learning is really hard for us students because not all of us can access internet or sometimes we have slow connection, and also lack of gadgets to use especially to those students who are expe...
